A TikTok user, Rico Watkins, recently shared a video showing a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado with a safety feature that some drivers may find annoying. The feature, called “Buckle to Drive,” requires the driver to buckle their seatbelt before shifting the car out of park. Watkins demonstrated that the car would not shift into gear until the seatbelt was engaged. The feature can be turned off in most cases, but for some fleet vehicles, it is always on and cannot be disabled. Some commenters expressed frustration with the feature, saying it would be inconvenient for short drives or when hooking up trailers. However, a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the feature increases seat belt usage, which can improve driver safety. Chevrolet has been implementing this feature in their vehicles since 2021, and it can be turned off in most cases.
