Uber and BYD, a Chinese automaker, formed a strategic partnership to bring 100,000 electric vehicles (EVs) to key global markets. Initially, the focus was on Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, the partnership has now expanded to include South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg. While the specific BYD model to be used in Johannesburg is unclear, the partners plan to offer special deals and financing options for the EVs, similar to their approach in Australia. In Australia, a limited number of BYD Atto 3s were offered with special leasing and financing rates. The pilot program in South Africa is expected to pave the way for broader adoption of EVs in the country’s ride-sharing industry. This partnership marks a significant step towards increasing the adoption of electric vehicles in the region and aligns with the growing demand for sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
