BYD is set to launch its Sealion 7 electric SUV in Australia in Q1 2025, with a starting price likely to be around $50,000-$60,000. This is a competitive price point for a car that will compete with the Tesla Model Y and the upcoming Kia EV5. The Sealion 7 will be available in single-motor rear-wheel drive and dual-motor all-wheel drive variants, with 170kW or 390kW outputs, respectively. It will also have a range of up to 610km on a single charge, with peak DC fast-charging capability of 230kW. The car is expected to be a key player in the market, particularly given Australians’ love for big cars and utes. BYD’s CEO, David Smitherman, has acknowledged that the Sealion 7 is a key opportunity for the brand in Australia, and the car’s size and features make it a promising offering.
