Toyota’s GR performance brand has unveiled a new flagship model, the GR GT, a highly focused coupe developed on a lightweight platform with advanced aerodynamics and a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. The GR GT is one of a trio of new models on the same architecture, including a customer racing version called GR GT3 and a proposed Lexus iteration with pure-electric power, called the Lexus LFA Concept. The new lineup aims to capture the spirit of the iconic Lexus LFA supercar, which was produced from 2010 to 2012.
The GR GT features a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, with an all-aluminium body frame for low weight and high rigidity. The new V8 engine has dry-sump lubrication, and the drivetrain uses a carbon-fibre torque tube and a transaxle layout. The rear-located transaxle is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, a single electric motor, and a mechanical limited-slip differential. The GR GT rides on 20-inch wheels with mixed-size tires and features carbon ceramic brakes as standard.
Target outputs for the GR GT are 478kW/850Nm, although these figures are yet to be confirmed. The GR GT3, on the other hand, has been designed for global motorsport and is expected to be a competitive entry in the FIA GT3 class. The Lexus LFA Concept, meanwhile, explores a different path, prioritizing high style over aerodynamics. The electric powertrain is expected to deliver impressive performance, although technical specifications have not been released.
Toyota New Zealand is already planning for the local launch of the GR GT, with chief strategy officer Andrew Davis having attended the global launch and engaged in product training. The company is considering using its Gazoo Racing facility at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park to offer advanced driver training and car setup services to Kiwi customers. Davis notes that Toyota NZ has a strong presence in the country, with a custom facility and access to professional driver training, and is well-equipped to meet the needs of GR GT customers.
The Lexus LFA Concept is still in the development stage, but it is expected to be a highly exclusive and desirable model. With its pure-electric powertrain and sleek design, it is likely to appeal to fans of the original LFA supercar. The GR GT, meanwhile, is expected to be a highly competitive entry in the supercar market, with its advanced aerodynamics and powerful V8 engine. Overall, the new trio of models from Toyota and Lexus is expected to generate significant interest and excitement among car enthusiasts.
