Toyota has introduced a new infotainment system, called the Toyota Audio Multimedia System, on the 2026 Toyota RAV4. This system offers several improvements, including 5G integration, multiple widgets, a home screen, and a built-in dash camera called the Drive Recorder. The Drive Recorder is a notable feature that could have significant potential for future Toyota vehicles, particularly the upcoming 2027 Toyota GR GT sports car. The GR GT is expected to include the Toyota Audio Multimedia System, which would mean it would also come with the Drive Recorder.

The Drive Recorder can be used to record footage on the track, and with some software development, it could become a valuable tool for track days. Toyota’s Gazoo Racing Division could create software to analyze the footage and overlay data such as speed, location, G-meter, tire temperatures, and steering angle. This would turn the Drive Recorder into a performance data recorder, allowing drivers to review and improve their driving skills.

The system already allows owners to view footage on the infotainment screen or store it on a USB flash drive and transfer it to a computer. With the addition of GR Studio software, the footage could be enhanced with graphics and data overlays, making it an excellent tool for track enthusiasts. Other manufacturers, such as General Motors and Dodge, already offer similar features on their high-performance vehicles.

The possibility of the Drive Recorder being developed into a performance data recorder on the GR GT is exciting, and it could potentially trickle down to more affordable models like the next-generation GR86. The GR GT is expected to be a high-end sports car with a price tag of around $225,000, and it may be sold at select Lexus dealerships. If Toyota develops the Drive Recorder into a track-focused feature, it could be a major selling point for the GR GT and other future Toyota performance vehicles.
