The Goodwood Revival, a renowned event that celebrates historic machinery, period décor, and vintage costumery, will honor a significant milestone in 2026 – 80 years of the Vespa scooter. Over 300 pre-1967 Vespas will participate in the event’s opening parade around the 2.4-mile circuit. The Vespa’s story began in the aftermath of World War II, when Italy’s industry was crippled, and its citizens needed affordable transportation. Enrico Piaggio, an industrialist, pivoted his wartime aircraft manufacturing to address this need. He enlisted the help of aeronautical engineer Corradino D’Ascanio, who designed the Moto Piaggio #6, or MP6, despite his dislike for motorcycles.
The MP6 was a groundbreaking design that featured a stamped spar frame, stressed steel body panels, and a 98cc air-cooled two-stroke engine placed beside the rear wheel. This arrangement allowed for a clean, step-through design, and the scooter also featured a trailing-arm front suspension and controls mounted on the handlebars. The design was patented on April 23, 1946, and the Vespa was unleashed to the public shortly after. The name “Vespa” means “wasp” in Italian, which is fitting given the scooter’s distinctive sound and design.
Over the years, the Vespa’s engine capacity and features have changed, but its charm has remained the same. Today, Vespas are sold in over 80 countries, and more than 20 million have been produced since D’Ascanio’s design was first introduced. The Goodwood Revival’s tribute to the Vespa will be a celebration of the scooter’s enduring appeal and its significance in the motoring world. The event will kick off on September 18, 2026, with a parade of vintage Vespas, showcasing their unique design and unmistakable two-stroke buzz. The Vespa’s legacy is a testament to Italian innovation and design, and its impact on the world of transportation is still felt today. As the Goodwood Revival honors the Vespa’s 80th anniversary, it will be a celebration of the scooter’s enduring charm and its place in the hearts of motorcycle enthusiasts around the world.
