A European-spec Citroen eC3 has been spotted testing in Bengaluru, India, sparking speculation about a possible launch in the country. The test mule was partially camouflaged, with only the Citroen logo covered, and featured a distinctive Red and Black dual-tone color scheme. This is the same color scheme that was unveiled globally in October 2023. The eC3 spied in India boasts Citroen’s new design language, which is also seen on the Euro-spec C3 Aircross SUV. However, the Indian market currently has a different version of the eC3, which is based on the older design language and derived from the ICE C3 hatchback.

Given Citroen’s history of extensive camouflage on their India-spec vehicles before launch, it’s unlikely that the Euro-spec eC3 will be launched in India. Instead, it’s possible that the company is using the Euro-spec eC3 as a test bed for platform feasibility testing or to test out specific technologies, such as Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) autonomous driving features. These features are currently gaining traction in the Indian automotive market, and Citroen may be looking to develop and integrate them into their current Indian lineup, including the C3, eC3, Basalt X, and Aircross X.

Citroen India has struggled to make a significant impact in the country, with sales figures consistently at the lower end of the charts. The company has focused on developing low-cost, Indian-ized versions of its vehicles, using the CMP skateboard for maximum localization. However, the appearance of the Euro-spec eC3 in India may indicate a shift in strategy, with the company potentially considering the launch of global versions in India. While the launch of the Euro-spec eC3 in India is uncertain, the technology it is testing may eventually make its way into Citroen’s Indian lineup.

The Citroen 2.0 strategy, which includes the launch of X versions of the Basalt and Aircross SUV, has marked a significant shift in the company’s approach, with a greater emphasis on features and technology. The spy shots of the Euro-spec eC3 suggest that Citroen is exploring new avenues to enhance its presence in the Indian market. As more details emerge, it will become clearer whether the Euro-spec eC3 or its technology will be launched in India. For now, the sighting of the Euro-spec eC3 in India has generated interest and speculation about Citroen’s future plans in the country.
