The Skoda Kylaq and Toyota Taisor are two compact SUVs that boast sporty aspirations, equipped with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and manual or automatic transmission options. To determine which one is more fuel-efficient, we conducted real-world mileage tests. The results showed that the Taisor Turbo was more frugal than the Kylaq in both manual and automatic transmissions.
In the manual transmission test, the Taisor Turbo delivered an average of 13.8kpl, outperforming the Kylaq’s 12.87kpl. Although the Kylaq’s larger fuel tank allowed it to travel 68km further on a single tank, the Taisor Turbo’s superior fuel efficiency gave it an edge. The Taisor Turbo’s ARAI mileage is also 1.5kpl higher than the Kylaq’s.
In the automatic transmission test, the Taisor Turbo AT posted an average real-world mileage of 12.76kpl, surpassing the Kylaq AT’s 11.03kpl. The Taisor Turbo AT was 1.73kpl more efficient than the Kylaq AT, although the Skoda’s larger fuel tank enabled it to travel 24km further on a single tank.
The tests were conducted in a controlled environment, with the cars driven in fixed city and highway loops, and tyre pressures maintained according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The results suggest that the Toyota Taisor Turbo is the more fuel-efficient compact SUV, whether in manual or automatic transmission. However, the Skoda Kylaq’s larger fuel tank provides it with a longer range, which may be a consideration for some buyers.
