The 8 Hours of Bahrain, the final round of the World Endurance Championship (WEC), has come to a close. The highly anticipated event saw Ferrari secure its first Hypercar World Championship title, with drivers Alessandro Pier Guidi, Antonio Giovinazzi, and James Calado claiming the top spot. The Italian manufacturer also secured its first Manufacturers’ title in the category, with three cars finishing in the top five. This marks Ferrari’s first world title in a top category since 2008 in Formula 1.
Toyota dominated the race from start to finish, with its two GR010 Hybrids securing a one-two finish. The No. 7 car, driven by Kamui Kobayashi, Nyck de Vries, and Mike Conway, took the victory, ahead of the No. 8 car driven by Sébastien Buemi, Ryō Hirakawa, and Brendon Hartley. Aston Martin’s Alex Riberas briefly challenged Toyota’s dominance with a supersonic restart, but a drive-through penalty for failing to respect yellow flags relegated the Valkyrie to the back of the field.
Peugeot also showed promise, with Theo Pourchaire leading the race for several laps before losing ground to the Toyotas due to worn tires. The French manufacturer’s No. 94 car, driven by Pourchaire, Loïc Duval, and Malthe Jakobsen, finished 10th, behind the other Peugeot, the No. 93 driven by Jean-Éric Vergne, Mikkel Jensen, and Paul di Resta.
In the LMGT3 category, the French team Akkodis ASP took the win with the No. 87 Lexus, driven by Jose Maria Lopez, Clemens Schmid, and Petru Umbrarescu. Mercedes-AMG secured its first podium finish in the WEC with the No. 61 car, driven by Maxime Martin, Lin Hodenius, and Martin Berry. Manthey 1st Phorm was crowned champion with the No. 91 car, driven by Richard Lietz, Riccardo Pera, and Ryan Hardwick.
The race also marked the final professional outing for Jenson Button, who was involved in a collision with the Ferrari 296 GT3 Vista AF Corse #54. The Cadillac #38, in which he was partnered with Earl Bamber and Sebastian Bourdais, finished 16th. Overall, the 8 Hours of Bahrain was a thrilling conclusion to the WEC season, with Ferrari and Toyota dominating the Hypercar category and Akkodis ASP taking the win in LMGT3.
