Czech automaker Skoda has unveiled a new all-electric motorcycle concept, the Slavia B, which pays homage to a bicycle built by the company’s predecessor, Laurin & Klement, over a century ago. The Slavia B was designed in-house by Romain Bucaille, who typically works on car exteriors for Skoda. Bucaille described the experience as a “nice change of pace” and began the design process with pencil sketches, enjoying the freedom of creating without the need for a screen.

The new Slavia B features a minimalist design, with a notable gap where the engine would typically be found on a traditional motorcycle. This gap is meant to evoke a sense of lightness and simplicity. The bike also includes a built-in leather tool bag, a nod to the original Slavia B’s sporting past. In 1901, rider Narcis Podsedníček rode a Slavia B in the Paris-Berlin race, and the tool bag is a tribute to this heritage.

Bucaille describes the new Slavia B as a “futuristic café racer in Modern Solid style,” referencing the minimalist and speedy motorcycles popularized in the UK in the 1960s. While the concept is currently just a design exercise, it could potentially enter production in the future. If it does, it would be a continuation of the Laurin & Klement legacy, which began in 1895 as a bicycle manufacturer.

Laurin & Klement’s history is closely tied to that of Skoda, which became part of the company in 1925. Today, Laurin & Klement exists as a trim level for Skoda’s luxury vehicles, such as the Superb. The fact that Skoda is still imagining new bikes after over 125 years of existence is a testament to the enduring appeal of two-wheeled mobility. The Slavia B concept serves as a reminder of how little has changed in the world of transportation, despite the many advancements in technology.

The Slavia B’s electric powertrain and minimalist design make it a unique and intriguing concept. While there is no word on whether it will enter production, it is an exciting example of Skoda’s commitment to innovation and its willingness to pay homage to its rich heritage. As Skoda continues to explore new ideas and concepts, the Slavia B serves as a reminder of the company’s long history and its dedication to pushing the boundaries of mobility.
