Nestlé is launching a six-month trial in France to sell KitKat and Lion chocolate balls in reusable stainless steel containers. The containers are made by Circolution and are part of a deposit system, where customers pay a refundable €2 deposit when they buy the products through an app or online. After consumption, the packaging is collected, sorted, cleaned, and refilled. The goal is to assess consumer interest in this offer and provide a solution to reduce environmental impact. Nestlé aims to make 100% of its packaging reusable or recyclable by 2025. The trial is part of the “EncoRe plus de réemploi” initiative, which is funded by a national competition to reduce packaging waste. The program is managed by Citeo, a nonprofit organization that manages the end life of packaging. The reusable containers are expected to reduce single-use packaging in France and provide a positive market signal towards a more sustainable future.
