The 14th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini improved to 4-0 on the season with an 84-65 victory over Colgate on Friday. Despite a slow start, the Illini were able to pull away in the second half behind a record-setting performance from freshman forward David Mirković. Mirković set the freshman record for most rebounds in a game with 21 and became the first Illini since 1972 to have a 20-20 game, scoring 27 points and grabbing 21 rebounds.
The game was closely contested in the first half, with Colgate’s physical perimeter defense challenging the Illini. The Raiders forced five turnovers in the first half and scored nine points off of them, keeping the game close. However, the Illini’s size advantage and rebounding ability helped them stay ahead. Freshman guard Keaton Wagler was a key contributor on the glass, grabbing six rebounds, including three on the offensive end.
In the second half, Mirković took over, using Colgate’s physicality to his advantage and getting to the free throw line at a high rate. He knocked down all eight of his free throw attempts and hit three three-pointers, leading the Illini to a 24-point lead at one point. The Raiders were unable to keep up with Mirković, and the Illini cruised to a 19-point victory.
While Mirković had a standout performance, veteran guards Andrej Stojaković and Kylan Boswell struggled with their shooting. Stojaković shot 3-11 from the field, while Boswell was 5-16. However, the Illini were able to overcome their struggles and secure the win.
Illinois head coach Brad Underwood praised Mirković’s performance, saying that he “strives for greatness” and “doesn’t settle.” Underwood also noted that the team’s rebounding and second-chance opportunities were key to their success. The Illini will look to build on this win as they face No. 8 Alabama in five days.
Overall, the Illini’s victory over Colgate was a testament to their depth and resilience. Despite struggling at times, they were able to find ways to score and secure the win. With Mirković’s emergence and the team’s strong rebounding, the Illini are looking like a formidable opponent in the early going.
