A new collaboration between food manufacturers, logistics providers, and charities is set to revolutionize the food supply chain by reducing waste and increasing efficiency. The partnership, which includes Zest (formerly The Wonki Collective), Google Cloud, Bristol Superlight, and others, is developing an AI-powered platform that connects food manufacturers with charities and logistics providers to match surplus food with areas of demand. The platform leverages Google Cloud’s BigQuery and Vertex AI to streamline the process of matching surplus food with where it is needed.
The platform has the potential to reduce food waste, lower costs, and decrease carbon emissions. According to Esra Kasapoglu, Director of AI and Data Economy at Innovate UK, the collaboration is a prime example of how strategic funding, collaboration, and entrepreneurial spirit can come together to develop innovative solutions. The project has the potential to transform the food supply chain and advance sustainability efforts.
Nestlé UK & Ireland, the world’s largest food manufacturer, is also involved in the project and sees it as an opportunity to further optimize surplus food within its operations. Dr. Emma Keller, Head of Sustainability at Nestlé UK & Ireland, commented that the initiative builds on the company’s work over the past decade to tackle food waste.
The collaboration also involves FareShare, a charity that redistributes surplus food to those in need. Simon Millard, Director of Food at FareShare, commented that the innovation will make a huge difference in the charity’s ability to get food to those who need it most. The project has the potential to unlock new efficiencies in systems and create greater social impact.
The development of the platform is part of a larger trend of using AI and technology to improve supply chain efficiency and reduce waste. The Retail Tech Innovation Hub is also recognizing innovation in AI and retail with its new RTIH AI in Retail Awards, which will celebrate companies that are using AI to drive efficiency and innovation in the retail industry. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in London on September 3rd.
Overall, the collaboration between food manufacturers, logistics providers, and charities has the potential to make a significant impact on reducing food waste and increasing efficiency in the supply chain. The use of AI and technology is driving innovation in the retail industry and has the potential to create positive social and environmental impact.
