Embraer’s E-Freighter Receives FAA Certification

Embraer’s E-Freighter, a converted passenger-to-freighter version of its E190 jet, has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification. This certification allows the E190F to operate commercially in the United States and expands air cargo options for carriers. The E190F is designed to transport a variety of cargo, including perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, and even automotive parts. The aircraft’s large cargo door and holds allow for easy loading and unloading of pallets, making it an attractive option for cargo operators. The certification is seen as a strategic move by Embraer to capitalize on the growing demand for air cargo capacity and to provide a cost-effective alternative to larger freighters. With the FAA certification, the E190F is set to enter service with several airline operators, including Atlas Air, which has already taken delivery of several converted aircraft.

The successful development of Hong Kong’s aviation industry in the future depends crucially on the implementation of sustainable fuel policies, expert analysts agree.

To maintain its competitiveness as an aviation hub, Hong Kong must implement policies that mandate the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and incentivize supply, according to sustainability executives. The “chicken-and-egg” problem of low demand and low supply of SAF requires government intervention, as most of the global supply is produced in North America and Europe due to tax incentives. Currently, 98% of Cathay Pacific’s greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to jet fuel use. To address this, the Hong Kong government has pledged to formulate an action plan for SAF usage and simplify the approval process for transport and storage. The head of sustainability at John Swire & Sons, which controls Cathay Pacific, has urged the government to take action, stating that investment in SAF is vital for Hong Kong to remain a global aviation hub.
