Wood Pellet Biofuel Project Sparks Controversy in Local Community
A proposed plan by Golden State Natural Resources (GSNR) aims to convert California trees into wood pellets for burning in foreign power plants. The plan involves building two factories in Lassen and Tuolumne counties to produce wood pellets from biomass gathered from a 100-mile radius. The pellets will be shipped to Stockton, loaded onto ships, and sent to foreign power plants for energy production. Humboldt County is involved as Supervisor Rex Bohn sits on GSNR’s Board of Directors, and biomass from the area may be used in the project. Environmental groups, such as the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center and the Natural Resources Defense Council, have expressed concerns about increased greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and forest health impacts from the project.
