The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a large-scale energy efficiency initiative in public housing, aiming to promote climate resilience and sustainable development. The initiative, which is one of the most ambitious in India, involves integrating high-efficiency appliances into Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) homes for lakhs of beneficiaries. A tripartite memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Andhra Pradesh State Housing Corporation Limited (APSHCL), Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), and the Andhra Pradesh State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation (AP SEEDCO) to formalize the initiative.
In the first phase, the state will equip five lakh PMAY households with energy-efficient appliances, including LED bulbs, LED batten lights, and BLDC ceiling fans. This will enable households to move into homes that are not only affordable but also energy-efficient from the outset. The initiative is expected to save each household around Rs 3,341 annually on electricity bills, as BLDC fans offer 70-80% energy savings and LED lighting significantly reduces power consumption.
The program is also expected to ease peak power demand, reduce stress on distribution networks, and improve grid stability, particularly during summer months. Experts at the India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 International Conference described the program as a major milestone in India’s sustainable housing ecosystem. A pilot launched in November last year, covering 18,000 beneficiaries, recorded positive energy savings, high beneficiary satisfaction, and operational readiness for statewide expansion.
The initiative is part of the state’s efforts to embed sustainability into mass housing programs, under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The state is emerging as a national frontrunner in this area, with the government committed to promoting climate resilience and sustainable development. The program is expected to have a significant impact on the state’s energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and could serve as a model for other states to follow. Overall, the initiative is a significant step towards creating sustainable and energy-efficient public housing in India.
