Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director of Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. (GBL), has been awarded the prestigious Plinio Nastari Sugar Excellence Award by the International Sugar Organisation (ISO) for his exceptional contributions to sustainable sugar, bioenergy, and rural development. This award is a significant milestone for India’s sugar, ethanol, and bioenergy sectors, and Somaiya is the first Indian to receive this recognition.
Somaiya’s leadership has been instrumental in developing one of India’s most integrated biorefining ecosystems, which combines agriculture, green chemistry, renewable energy, and rural development. Under his guidance, GBL works with over 20,000 farmers across 200 villages, enhancing yields, promoting regenerative cultivation, and strengthening climate resilience. The company’s initiatives have not only driven economic growth but also contributed to social and environmental progress.
Somaiya’s vision is centered around the idea that business must drive social and environmental progress alongside financial growth. He emphasizes the importance of soil health, agricultural ecosystems, and small farmer livelihoods in shaping a sustainable future. His company has launched several initiatives, including a multi-purpose specialty bio-chemical plant, biotechnology research, and a CO₂-to-DME pilot plant, which aim to promote renewable energy, reduce emissions, and develop sustainable products.
Somaiya’s achievements have been recognized with several awards, including the Rasayan Udyog Ratna Award by the Indian Chemical Society for his contributions to sustainable chemistry. His leadership approach is grounded in scientific innovation, farmer-centric development, and alignment with India’s renewable-energy and bioeconomy priorities. The Plinio Nastari Sugar Excellence Award is a testament to his dedication to sustainable development and his commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and society.
The award was presented at the 34th ISO International Seminar in London, under the theme “Sustainable Solutions for Sugar & Energy.” Somaiya’s acceptance of the award highlights the importance of sustainable practices in the sugar and energy industries and sets an example for other companies to follow. His legacy is built on the principles of his grandfather, who established the Somaiya family’s first school in 1942, and he continues to drive progress in the sugar, ethanol, and bioenergy sectors while promoting social and environmental responsibility.
