The Indian state of Rajasthan has unveiled the country’s largest solar park, located in the city of Bikaner. The solar park, which spans over 1,000 acres, has a capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW) and is equipped with a 5-gigawatt hour (GWh) battery storage system. This project is a significant step towards India’s goal of becoming a leader in renewable energy.
The solar park is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 500,000 homes and reduce carbon emissions by 4 million tons per year. The park’s battery storage system will enable the storage of excess energy generated during the day for use during periods of low sunlight or at night, ensuring a stable and reliable supply of electricity.
The project has been developed by the Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation Limited (RRECL) in partnership with the Centre for Renewable Energy Development (CRED) and other private companies. The solar park has been built at a cost of approximately ₹6,500 crores (around $870 million) and is expected to create over 1,000 jobs in the region.
The unveiling of the solar park is a major milestone for Rajasthan, which aims to generate 30% of its electricity from solar power by 2025. The state has set a target of installing 25,000 MW of solar power capacity by 2025, and the Bikaner solar park is a significant step towards achieving this goal.
The project also highlights India’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to cleaner sources of energy. The country has set a target of generating 40% of its electricity from non-fossil fuels by 2030, and projects like the Bikaner solar park will play a crucial role in achieving this goal.
The 5 GWh battery storage system at the solar park is one of the largest in the world and will enable the park to supply electricity to the grid even during periods of low sunlight. The system will also help to stabilize the grid and ensure a reliable supply of electricity to households and businesses.
Overall, the unveiling of the Bikaner solar park is a significant achievement for Rajasthan and India’s renewable energy sector. The project demonstrates the country’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to cleaner sources of energy, and is expected to have a positive impact on the environment and local communities.
