The municipality of Aradippou in Cyprus is strongly opposing the construction and operation of a pyrolysis and refining plant in the Koshi area of Larnaca district. Pyrolysis is a process that involves heating organic materials, such as biomass, in the absence of oxygen, resulting in the production of combustible gases and bio-char. The proposed plant, to be built by Alphakat Holdings International Ltd, has raised concerns among residents and local authorities due to potential environmental and health risks.
Despite earlier objections from the Aradippou municipality and residents, the department of environment gave a written opinion on September 26 stating that it did not object to the development, provided certain conditions were met. However, the municipal council is not satisfied with this response and has authorized Mayor Christodoulos Partou to contact the interior and agriculture ministries, as well as the president of the Republic, to demand answers and restate the municipality’s opposition to the project.
The council also reviewed a memorandum submitted by the Larnaca district self-governance organisations (EOA) to the president, which expressed strong opposition to the proposed pyrolysis plant and asphalt production units in Koshi, citing serious environmental and health risks. Additionally, Mayor Partou has requested the reclassification of the Koshi industrial zone from B2 to C3, arguing that the area is already burdened with heavy industries and faces significant pressure from pollution and industrial activity.
The municipal council has unanimously decided to reaffirm its opposition to the project, stating that the concerns of residents and local leaders have not received an adequate response from the relevant ministries and departments. The council is seeking answers and reassurances that the potential risks associated with the plant will be properly addressed. The opposition to the project is based on concerns about the potential impact on the environment and public health, and the municipality is seeking to protect the interests of its residents.
