On India’s 79th Independence Day, Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio unveiled new infrastructure to promote sustainability in the state. He inaugurated 10 biofertilizer production units across various districts, which will produce 5,000 liters of indigenous, low-cost biofertilizers and biopesticides annually. The units are part of the Soil Health and Fertility Scheme under the PM-RKVY program and are backed by a technology transfer agreement with the Central Agricultural University. Dr. Rio emphasized that the initiative aims to balance agricultural productivity with ecological preservation, building a future where Nagaland’s agriculture is sustainable and self-reliant.

In addition to the biofertilizer units, Dr. Rio also launched 41 GPS-enabled waste collection and transportation vehicles to 20 Urban Local Bodies across the state. The vehicles, equipped with public address systems, will improve monitoring and efficiency of waste collection. Sanitation workers will also receive uniforms, protective gear, and equipment to enhance working conditions and service delivery. The program, part of the Clean India Mission, aims to modernize waste management in the state by leveraging CSR contributions and central support.

The two initiatives highlight Nagaland’s dual agenda: revitalizing its agrarian economy with sustainable agriculture practices and investing in cleaner and more resilient cities. The biofertilizer units will provide low-cost, eco-friendly alternatives to traditional fertilizers, while the waste management program will improve urban sanitation and reduce waste. Dr. Rio’s announcements on Independence Day demonstrate the state’s commitment to sustainability and its vision for a more environmentally conscious future. By promoting sustainable agriculture and urban sanitation, Nagaland aims to build a more resilient and self-reliant economy, balancing productivity with ecological preservation. The state’s sustainability agenda is a significant step towards creating a better future for its citizens and the environment.
