In March 2022, North Macedonia’s renewable energy output declined by 11% compared to the same period last year, according to data from the state-owned energy holding company, Macedonian Energy Transmission Operator (METRO).
The country’s renewable energy production stood at 406.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in March, down from 456.8 GWh in March 2021. The decline was largely attributed to a combination of factors, including a decrease in solar power generation and a change in wind patterns.
Solar power generation fell by 18% year-on-year to 112.8 GWh, while wind power production dropped by 14% to 86.3 GWh. On the other hand, hydropower generation increased by 5% to 167.1 GWh, which was the largest contributor to the country’s overall renewable energy output.
Despite the decline in renewable energy production, North Macedonia’s energy mix remains heavily reliant on renewable sources. In March, renewables accounted for 55.6% of the country’s total electricity output, with coal-fired power plants generating 34.3% and thermal power plants producing 10.1%.
The decline in renewable energy output has had a ripple effect on the country’s electricity market. Wholesale electricity prices rose to 151.8 denars per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in March, up from 123.6 denars/kWh in March 2021. This increase was attributed to a combination of factors, including the decline in renewable energy production and an increase in demand due to the country’s economic growth.
Despite the challenges faced by the renewable energy sector, North Macedonia remains committed to increasing its reliance on renewable sources. The country has set a goal of generating 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025 and 30% by 2030. To achieve this goal, the government has implemented various incentives and policies, including a support scheme for solar and wind power projects.
Overall, the decline in North Macedonia’s renewable energy output in March was a setback, but the country remains committed to its renewable energy ambitions. The government and energy industry stakeholders are working together to overcome the challenges facing the sector and increase the country’s reliance on renewable sources.
