In Vidarbha, a region known for its extreme weather conditions, five villages have successfully transitioned to 100% solar energy, with many more on the brink of going green. The villages, located in Wardha, Amravati, and Chandrapur districts, have been equipped with rooftop solar panels, making them entirely powered by renewable energy. The transition is a result of government schemes, as well as the proactive efforts of locals who have embraced solar energy.
Chinchghat, a village in Wardha district, is one of the shining examples of this transformation. Its villagers took bank loans to install rooftop panels and relied on central government subsidies, demonstrating self-motivation and initiative. In all these villages, solar power has brought a new level of energy security and self-sufficiency, making it an economic decision as well as an eco-friendly one.
Nagpur is leading the way in Vidarbha’s solar revolution, with the highest number of rooftop installations in the region. The district has seen 1,136 rooftop solar systems installed, generating 6,487 kW of green energy. Two villages in Yavatmal district, Shastri Nagar and Wadgaon, are also nearing completion of their solar transition, with 703 rooftop panels already installed.
Vidarbha’s success is attributed to its abundant sunlight, which makes it an ideal location for solar energy production. The region’s willingness to adopt change and the support of government schemes have also contributed to its progress. As more villages transition to solar energy, Vidarbha is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also redefining rural sustainability. With many more villages poised to join the league of Maharashtra’s largest solar villages, Vidarbha is leading the state’s solar revolution.
