The Indian government is urging air-conditioner manufacturers to adopt energy-efficient solutions, particularly BEE 5-star-rated models, to reduce electricity consumption and ensure grid stability as the country prepares for record-breaking power demand this summer. With 30% of installed air conditioners being over eight years old, using 40-50% more electricity than modern energy-efficient units, the country faces a significant opportunity to reduce energy consumption through upgrading and behavioral changes. Simply setting air conditioners to 24°C instead of lower temperatures could save up to 10 billion kWh annually, translating to thousands of crores in energy cost reductions.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has written to air-conditioning manufacturers, seeking their collaboration in a nationwide awareness campaign to encourage consumers to switch to BEE 5-star-rated models. Milind Deore, secretary of BEE, emphasized the critical role of manufacturers in promoting energy-efficient cooling solutions. This move is a response to the urgency of the situation, as India’s demand for air conditioning continues to soar. By adopting energy-efficient solutions, the country can reduce its electricity consumption and ensure a more stable power grid, saving consumers money and contributing to a more sustainable future.
