Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy, emphasizing that there are no changes to the country’s solar energy policy or priorities. He made this clear during a meeting with senior officials from the Power Division, where he directed them to dispel any misconceptions about the solarization policy and provide accurate information to the public.

The meeting was held in response to reports that the government was planning to reduce the buyback rate for solar energy from Rs27 to Rs10 per unit of electricity, as well as imposing a 17% General Sales Tax (GST) on power consumed by net metering consumers during night hours. PM Shehbaz assured that the promotion of renewable energy remains a top priority for the government and that this policy will not be changed.

In addition to addressing the solar energy policy, the meeting also focused on power sector reforms, with the PM instructing officials to expedite the privatization of electricity distribution companies and resolve all legal matters related to the liquidation of generation companies. He also announced that a comprehensive package is being prepared to reduce electricity tariffs, which will be announced soon. The package aims to provide further relief to the public by reducing electricity costs and improving the efficiency of power distribution.

Overall, the meeting underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing energy sustainability through solarization, while ensuring transparency and public awareness about ongoing initiatives. The PM’s statement is a reassuring message to the public and the renewable energy sector, as it dispels rumors and confusion about the government’s plans for the solar energy policy.
