The province of Quang Tri in central Vietnam plans to increase its renewable energy capacity by adding 1,800 MW of land-based wind power, 500 MW of offshore wind power, and other alternative energy sources to its draft implementation scheme for the national power development plan (PDP) VIII. The plan also includes 260.5 MW of hydropower, 119.6 MW of solar power, and 23 MW of rooftop solar power for self-consumption. Additionally, the province aims to facilitate the import of 2,000 MW of power from Laos by 2030.

To achieve this, the provincial authorities plan to facilitate the deployment of wind, solar, and gas-fired power projects, as well as imported power from Laos. The Department of Industry and Trade will work with investors to complete the applications for in-principle approval by March 20, while the Department of Finance will finalize the land recovery plan for site clearance by March 25.

The province’s plan is in line with the overall goal of increasing Vietnam’s renewable energy capacity. Vietnam’s current PDP VIII has a target of 6,000 MW of offshore wind power by 2030, but the Ministry of Industry and Trade suggested delaying this goal to after 2030. However, the Government has since requested that offshore wind power projects under the PDP VIII must be completed by 2030. Quang Tri’s plan is a significant step towards achieving this goal and demonstrates the province’s commitment to renewable energy development.
