The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana (PM Surya Ghar) is a government scheme launched on February 13, 2024, with a budget of ₹75,021 crore to provide 1 crore families with 300 units of free electricity each month. The scheme has achieved a milestone of 10.09 lakh households installing solar power plants as of March 10, 2025, which is a significant step towards India’s journey towards solar energy adoption.

Under the scheme, households can install rooftop solar panels and earn up to ₹15,000 annually by selling excess electricity back to the grid. The government provides a significant subsidy for the installation cost, covering up to 60% of the cost for systems up to 2 kW, and 40% additional subsidy for 3 kW systems. This reduces the total cost to around ₹1.45 lakh for a 3 kW system.

To apply for the scheme, individuals can visit the official portal, register with their consumer number, name, address, and preferred solar capacity, and upload required documents such as Aadhaar Card, Proof of Address, and others. The government will transfer the subsidy amount directly to the applicant’s bank account under the Direct Benefit Transfer scheme once the solar plant is installed and net metering is set up.

The scheme promotes clean energy adoption, reduces electricity bills, and earns individuals up to ₹15,000 per year by selling excess power back to the grid. By using rooftop solar panels, individuals can generate 15 units of electricity per day, which can be used for free, and any excess power can be sent back to the grid. This scheme is a significant step towards making India a leader in renewable energy initiatives.
