The Maltese government has launched a tender for a floating wind farm with a contract value of approximately €1 billion. The project aims to produce 300MW of energy and involves the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning of the wind farm, with a concession period of 35 years. Two potential sites have been identified: Hurd’s Bank off Marsaskala and south of the Freeport, both outside territorial waters but within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The chosen sites were selected based on factors such as distance from the power station, environmental impact, and wind strength. The project will involve the transmission of energy generated by the turbines back to shore via export cables. Bidders have until March 28 to submit their proposals. Energy Minister Miriam Dalli and Interconnect Malta CEO Ismail D’amato described the project as an “important milestone” in the country’s move towards a cleaner, greener energy landscape. The estimated contract value is €1,007,000,000.
