The government of Karnataka has taken a significant step towards promoting solar energy adoption in the state by installing solar panels within the premises of Vidhana Soudha and Vikas Soudha, the iconic government buildings in Bengaluru. Due to space constraints and the heritage status of Vidhana Soudha, the solar panels have been set up in the parking lot instead of on the rooftop. The project is being implemented in partnership with SELCO Foundation, a non-profit organization that works towards promoting sustainable energy.
The installation of solar panels is expected to generate around 300 kilowatts (KW) of power, which is approximately 12% of the total energy requirement of the two buildings. Although the structures are large, the installation of solar panels is limited due to the heritage status of the buildings. The current power bill for the two buildings, which house nearly 1,000 rooms, is around Rs 12-15 lakh per month. With the installation of solar panels, the government expects to save around Rs 20 lakh per year, and the investment is expected to yield returns within a couple of years.
The project aims to encourage the adoption of solar energy in government buildings across the state, including panchayat office buildings. Speaker UT Khader emphasized the importance of reducing the burden on electricity and embracing sustainable energy. He noted that it is essential for the government to lead by example and adopt solar energy, especially since it issues orders promoting its adoption. A proposal is being prepared to install solar panels across all Legislative Houses, which is expected to further promote the use of renewable energy in the state.
The initiative is a significant step towards promoting sustainable energy and reducing the state’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources. By adopting solar energy, the government can reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner environment. The project is also expected to inspire other government buildings and institutions to follow suit, leading to a wider adoption of solar energy across the state. Overall, the installation of solar panels in Vidhana Soudha and Vikas Soudha is a positive step towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for Karnataka.
