Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is undergoing a significant transformation in its energy sector, with a strong emphasis on bio-energy, ethanol blending, and circular economy solutions. According to Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, this vision is being showcased at the India Energy Week (IEW) 2026, which highlights the government’s commitment to cleaner, greener, and more sustainable energy pathways.
Puri noted that India has made remarkable progress in bio-fuels and waste-to-energy initiatives over the past few years. The country has increased ethanol blending in petrol from 1.53% to 20%, reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports and providing additional income opportunities for farmers. The Bio-Energy, Ethanol, and CBG Zone at the IEW 2026 has emerged as a major attraction, demonstrating how agricultural residue, organic waste, and other by-products are being converted into useful energy resources.
India now has 133 Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants, producing around 926 tonnes of CBG per day, which is helping promote cleaner cooking fuel and transportation fuel across urban and rural areas. The stronger integration of CBG with City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks is a key aspect of this initiative. Puri emphasized that IEW 2026 reflects India’s move towards a circular energy model, where waste is treated as a resource rather than a burden.
The minister highlighted the importance of such initiatives in achieving India’s climate goals while ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth. The India Energy Week 2026, being held in Goa from January 27 to 30, brings together policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to shape the future of the country’s energy landscape. The event showcases India’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to a more sustainable energy sector.
Overall, India’s energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the government’s focus on bio-energy, ethanol blending, and circular economy solutions. The India Energy Week 2026 provides a platform for stakeholders to come together and discuss the way forward for the country’s energy sector, with a focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and environmental protection.
