The Indian state of Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in its power sector by generating over 7 megawatts (MW) of solar electricity under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to transform every household into a small power generation unit, promoting the use of renewable energy and reducing dependence on conventional power sources. The Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has played a crucial role in the successful rollout of the scheme, providing technical support and streamlined processes for installation and grid connectivity.
As of now, 17,601 electricity consumers have registered under the scheme, with 2,061 households already completing solar panel installations. The government provides a subsidy of up to Rs 85,800, making rooftop solar adoption financially viable for middle- and lower-income families. Even a 1-kilowatt solar plant can generate an average of 100 units of electricity per month, sufficient to meet the monthly needs of a typical household. Excess electricity can be exported to the grid, ensuring a steady additional income for consumers along with long-term savings.
The public response to the scheme has been encouraging, with TSECL setting an ambitious target of increasing the state’s solar power generation capacity to 50 MW within the next year. This would bring a transformative change to Tripura’s power sector and significantly strengthen its renewable energy footprint. The scheme has opened up an unprecedented opportunity for ordinary electricity consumers to reduce their electricity bills to zero and earn additional income by supplying surplus power back to the grid.
TSECL has urged all electricity consumers to take advantage of the scheme by registering through the official government website or visiting the nearest TSECL office. The message is clear: converting one’s home into a source of power is a practical path toward financial independence. As Tripura moves forward on the path of clean energy, the state’s growing solar capacity stands as a strong step toward a self-reliant and sustainable future. With the cost of electricity steadily rising, the scheme offers a viable solution for households to reduce their energy expenses and contribute to a cleaner environment. Overall, Tripura’s achievement in solar electricity generation is a significant milestone in its journey toward energy self-reliance and sustainable development.
