The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) Udaipur Local Centre observed Energy Conservation Day with a thought-provoking program focused on sustainable energy practices and environmental responsibility. The event aimed to promote energy-efficient technologies, reduce carbon emissions, and increase the use of renewable energy sources. Er Purushottam Paliwal, Chairman of IEI Udaipur Local Centre, emphasized the importance of energy conservation in preserving resources for future generations.
The program featured several speakers, including Er Sohan Singh Rathore, who discussed the scholarships distributed to students from the savings of the 33rd Indian Engineering Congress. Er Prahlad Chandra Tiwari, Executive Engineer at Ajmer Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, highlighted the need to save electricity to protect life on Earth. He explained that fossil fuels are formed over millions of years and that rising sea levels are a slow-growing global disaster, causing up to one billion people living in low-lying areas to be at risk of flooding.
Er Tiwari also briefed the audience on key provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, and BEE star labeling, including standards and labeling, energy conservation building codes, and enforcement mechanisms. He discussed the issue of system power losses in AVVNL, noting that most losses occur during transmission and distribution, and highlighted solutions such as smart meters and high-voltage distribution systems.
Another speaker, Er Shafique Ahmed, General Manager at Secure Meters Limited, emphasized the importance of energy conservation in linking national energy security. He explained that identifying high energy-consuming areas, improving efficiency, and addressing leakage and reactive power issues can achieve significant energy savings. He also stressed the growing importance of electric vehicles and noted that electricity storage remains a major challenge.
The program concluded with the awarding of scholarships to two students, Ms Antima Tiwari and Mr Parth Tripathi, under the scholarship program for economically weaker students run by IEI Jaipur Local Centre. The event was conducted with dignity, and the vote of thanks was presented by Honorary Secretary Er Piyush Javeria. Overall, the program highlighted the importance of energy conservation and the need for sustainable energy practices to mitigate the impacts of climate change and preserve resources for future generations.
