Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced that India has achieved a significant milestone in the current financial year by adding 31.25 GW of green energy capacity, with 24.28 GW being solar power. This is the highest-ever addition of green energy capacity in a single year. Joshi made this announcement while addressing the Global Energy Leaders’ Summit 2025 in Puri, which was inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

The minister also launched a new initiative, a 1.5 lakh rooftop solar ULA (Utility Led Aggregation) model, specifically for the state of Odisha. This project is expected to benefit approximately 7-8 lakh people across the state. The summit was attended by energy ministers from various states, highlighting the importance of renewable energy and its growing significance globally.

Joshi emphasized India’s role in driving the global surge in renewable energy, citing the rapid growth in capacity over the past two years. He noted that it took nearly 70 years to reach 1 TW of renewable energy capacity globally by 2022, but the second terawatt was achieved in just two years, by 2024. India’s contribution to this growth has been substantial, with the country emerging as a key player in the global renewable energy landscape.

The achievement of adding 31.25 GW of green energy capacity is a significant step towards India’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to cleaner sources of energy. The government’s initiatives, such as the rooftop solar ULA model, aim to increase access to renewable energy and promote its adoption across the country. With India’s energy demands expected to continue growing, the focus on renewable energy is crucial for sustainable development and reducing dependence on fossil fuels. The Global Energy Leaders’ Summit 2025 provides a platform for stakeholders to discuss and explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation in the renewable energy sector.
