India and Germany recently convened a high-profile roundtable to discuss strategies for advancing electric mobility in India. The meeting emphasized the need for a comprehensive, ecosystem-driven approach to achieve India’s ambitious electric mobility targets. The two countries identified five strategic priorities, including scalable financing, battery preparedness, and workforce development, to drive the next phase of India’s e-mobility transition.
The roundtable brought together senior officials from various sectors, including government, industry, and international partners, to discuss the importance of coordinated efforts to move beyond isolated pilot projects and towards a harmonized national framework. Participants stressed that India’s electric mobility targets will require cross-sectoral planning across renewable energy, transportation, manufacturing, finance, and skill development.
India has already put in place a robust policy framework for electric mobility, including initiatives such as the PM eDrive Scheme, PM eBus Sewa, and the Payment Security Mechanism. The 2024 Charging Infrastructure Guidelines have also set national standards for interoperability, safety, tariffs, and smart charging systems.
The roundtable discussions focused on five core themes, including multimodal electrification, charging infrastructure and grid readiness, financing and procurement, skills and gender inclusion, and Indo-German cooperation. The dialogue reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to promoting clean, efficient, and inclusive mobility solutions.
The Indo-German Partnership for Green and Sustainable Development (GSDP) serves as a strategic framework supporting climate-aligned, sustainable development and advancing initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement. The partnership provides a strong foundation to advance next-generation electric mobility solutions, building on a long-standing collaboration in renewable energy, urban development, public transport modernisation, and vocational training.
The meeting identified priority areas for ongoing collaboration, including grid management, battery circularity, multimodal planning, and vocational training. The GSDP will play a key role in enabling coordinated action and promoting clean, efficient, and inclusive mobility solutions. Overall, the roundtable marked an important step towards advancing electric mobility in India and promoting sustainable development in the country.
