The Adani Group, one of India’s leading business conglomerates, is set to enter the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) sector with a massive project in Gujarat’s Khavda. The project, which has already commenced, aims to build the largest BESS installation in India and one of the world’s largest single-location BESS deployments. The project is expected to be completed by March 2026 and will have a power capacity of 1,126 megawatts (MW) and an energy capacity of 3,530 MWh, making it capable of storing enough energy to supply 1,126 MW of power for about three hours.
The project will utilize over 700 battery containers, advanced lithium-ion battery technology, and smart energy management systems to ensure top performance. The initiative is expected to help manage electricity demand during peak hours, reduce carbon emissions, and support grid stability and 24/7 renewable power. The project will make Khavda the largest combined renewable and storage park in the world.
According to Chairman Gautam Adani, “Energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable-powered future. With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability.” The Adani Group plans to expand its energy storage capacity further, with a goal of adding 15 GWh by March 2027 and reaching 50 GWh within five years.
The company’s entry into the BESS sector is significant, as India aims to double its clean power capacity to 500 GW by the end of the decade. The country’s total power capacity is expected to reach about 800 MW this year, and accelerating battery installations will be crucial to meeting this goal. The Adani Group’s investment in large-scale energy storage positions the company as a leader in the global energy sector, alongside other major players.
The project’s completion will not only contribute to India’s energy independence and sustainability but also support the country’s net-zero and climate goals. With the growing importance of battery energy storage in modern energy systems, the Adani Group’s initiative is a significant step towards a cleaner and more reliable energy future. As the company expands its energy storage capacity, it is likely to have a profound impact on India’s energy landscape and contribute to the country’s transition to a renewable-powered future.
