The National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), both part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), have collaborated to establish the Centre for Artificial Learning and Intelligence for Biological Research and Education (CALIBRE). This new center aims to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into biological research, education, and innovation. The initiative has received a significant boost with a contribution of Rs 25 crore from Reed India Consulting LLP.
The application of AI in biology has the potential to revolutionize various fields, including medicine, public health, agriculture, bioengineering, neuroscience, and ecology. CALIBRE will develop AI tools and infrastructure tailored to India’s unique biodiversity, climate, and health needs. The center will serve as a national hub where biological expertise meets AI innovation, providing a platform for researchers to develop and apply AI solutions to real-world problems.
CALIBRE’s key objectives include building advanced AI infrastructure for biological research, developing brain-inspired AI systems, and training young Indian researchers in AI and biology. The center will also establish Chair Professorships and Research Travel Fellowships to strengthen India’s AI-biology ecosystem. By leveraging AI, researchers at NCBS and ICTS will be able to analyze complex biological systems, identify patterns, and develop predictive models to address pressing challenges in healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
The collaboration between NCBS, ICTS, and Reed India Consulting LLP is expected to have a significant impact on India’s scientific research and innovation landscape. By combining the strengths of biology and AI, CALIBRE will enable Indian researchers to contribute to global scientific advancements and develop innovative solutions to address the country’s unique challenges. With its focus on building a strong AI-biology ecosystem, CALIBRE is poised to become a leading center for interdisciplinary research and education in India.
