The V.O. Chidambaranar Port (VOC Port) in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, has solidified its position as India’s leading hub for exporting windmill components, playing a crucial role in the country’s growing renewable energy supply chain. Between April and August 2025, the port handled 1,158 windmill blades, marking a 5% increase from the same period in 2024. This builds on the port’s impressive growth in 2024, when it handled 1,869 blades by December, reflecting a 40% jump from 2023.
The port’s success can be attributed to its advanced infrastructure, including a 100,000-square-metre storage facility for oversized cargo, efficient handling systems, and smooth road connectivity. The exported blades, manufactured in industrial centers such as Bengaluru, Trichy, and Chennai, are shipped to destinations including the United States, Turkey, Australia, and several European nations. VOC Port Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit praised the operational efficiency, noting that the port continues to strengthen its reputation as the “preferred hub” for exporting renewable energy technology.
As the global focus on climate action intensifies, VOC Port’s growth not only boosts India’s export performance but also highlights Tamil Nadu’s transformation from traditional trade to high-tech renewable industries. The port is preparing to showcase its achievements at the upcoming India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025, where it expects to attract significant investment, with proposals worth ₹1 lakh crore for capacity expansion and green energy projects. The port’s achievements in windmill blade handling will be a key highlight, underscoring its pivotal role in advancing India’s transition to a sustainable maritime economy.
With global wind energy installations expected to double by 2030, VOC Port is well-placed to seize the opportunity. The port’s future plans include expanding rail connectivity and integrating green hydrogen facilities, positioning it as a key player in India’s clean energy journey. The port’s growth is expected to have a significant impact on India’s export performance, with wind component shipments valued in thousands of crore rupees annually. Overall, VOC Port’s success has reinforced its role in advancing India’s position in the global renewable energy sector.
