Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal emphasized India’s strong focus on sustainability as a key pillar of growth, citing the country’s intrinsic cultural values of respecting nature and living in harmony with the environment. He made these remarks while inaugurating the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting Exhibition. Goyal stressed that sustainability is non-negotiable in India’s growth journey, and the country is committed to learning from the developed world, particularly in adopting high-quality standards that have driven global economic growth.
Goyal highlighted the importance of international cooperation in developing standards, which can help harmonize practices, create opportunities for economic cooperation, and provide a foundation for growth. He noted that good standards are essential for a developing country like India, enabling it to contribute to both national and international progress. The minister also underscored India’s strong commitment to meeting its nationally determined contributions under the Paris Agreement, driven not by external pressure, but by a genuine belief in sustainability.
India has a robust framework for setting standards, with thousands of technical bodies and committees working across different sectors. While initially, the focus was on voluntary implementation, the country has shifted towards stricter adherence to standards, introducing Quality Control Orders in critical areas. The electrical and electronic industry is playing a growing role in energy efficiency and sustainability, as India transitions from electrical to electronic solutions. This shift can significantly reduce energy consumption, minimize pollution, and contribute to climate action, while ensuring high-quality products for consumers.
Goyal’s emphasis on sustainability reflects India’s determination to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility. The country’s commitment to international standards and cooperation is expected to drive growth, improve quality, and enhance its contribution to global progress. As India continues to evolve and grow, its focus on sustainability is likely to remain a key aspect of its development strategy, driven by a deep-seated cultural belief in living in harmony with nature.
