Telangana Vigilance Commissioner MG Gopal has emphasized the importance of adopting a comprehensive energy efficiency strategy in India, particularly in the southern states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. With over 35 years of public service, Gopal stressed that energy efficiency is crucial not only for environmental sustainability but also for economic growth. India has set ambitious climate goals, including reducing one billion tonnes of carbon emissions, cutting GDP emission intensity by 45% by 2030, and achieving net zero by 2070.

Gopal believes that Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will play a significant role in helping India achieve these targets. He noted that if energy efficiency is adopted on a large scale in these states, it could cut global emissions by nearly 20%. During consultations with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Gopal discussed innovative environmental initiatives, including the ADEETIE scheme, which supports micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in adopting energy-efficient technologies.

The ADEETIE scheme has a number of key features, including a Rs1,000 crore outlay, subsidized loans, and interest subvention. The scheme aims to promote energy efficiency in target sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and food processing. Gopal highlighted the potential of the scheme to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while boosting competitiveness and long-term sustainability. He also commended Telangana’s embrace of national programs such as UJALA, e-Mobility, and the Clean and Green Energy Policy 2025, which reflect the state’s commitment to ecological and economic progress.

Gopal also pointed to the Musi River Development Project, which aims to combine environmental restoration with economic revitalization. The project is expected to deliver significant energy savings, with up to 20% energy savings anticipated in Telangana’s Medak pharmaceutical cluster. Overall, Gopal’s comments highlight the importance of energy efficiency in achieving India’s climate goals and the significant role that Telangana and Andhra Pradesh can play in this effort. By adopting a comprehensive energy efficiency strategy, India can reduce its carbon emissions, promote economic growth, and achieve a more sustainable future.
