The Ministry of Power in India has released the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI) 2024, which evaluates the energy efficiency of all 36 Indian states and union territories. The index aims to promote data-driven decision making, recognize best practices, and foster competition among states to optimize energy usage. The SEEI 2024 uses a revamped framework with 66 indicators across seven critical demand sectors, including buildings, industry, and transport.

The top-performing states in energy efficiency, according to the SEEI 2024, are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, and Tripura. These states have demonstrated strong performance across sectors, thanks to effective policy implementation, sectoral coordination, and investment in energy-saving technologies. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, for example, have robust policies for energy-efficient buildings, strong enforcement of energy codes, and high investment in energy-efficient urban transport and municipal services.

Assam and Tripura, on the other hand, have made proactive efforts in rural energy access and distribution sector efficiency, effective use of renewable-powered municipal services, and cross-sectoral energy conservation campaigns. These states have also leveraged energy data transparency, smart metering, and electric mobility initiatives, reflecting an integrated approach to energy governance.

The SEEI matters because it encourages competitive federalism by benchmarking states, helps states identify gaps in energy planning and resource use, and supports the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) goals, which aim to ensure affordable and clean energy for all. The index also informs future planning under schemes like the Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) program, the Perform Achieve and Trade (PAT) scheme, and the Smart Cities Mission.

Overall, the SEEI 2024 provides a comprehensive assessment of energy efficiency in India and highlights the progress made by states in reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable energy practices. By recognizing and rewarding best practices, the index aims to drive energy efficiency and support India’s transition to a more sustainable energy future. The SEEI’s findings and rankings are expected to inform policy decisions and guide investments in energy efficiency, ultimately contributing to a more energy-efficient and sustainable India.
