The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is gaining popularity in Andhra Pradesh, with 5,789 EVs registered in the first quarter of FY 2025-26. According to the AP Transport Department, around one lakh EVs were registered between 2022 and June 30, 2025, with electric two-wheelers accounting for 85% of the total vehicles. Visakhapatnam district has the highest number of registered electric two-wheelers, with 13,791 vehicles.
The growing demand for EVs is attributed to the increasing fuel costs and high maintenance costs of fossil fuel-based vehicles. Residents like Bala Narayana have reported significant savings of around Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per month and Rs 15,000 annually by switching to EV bikes. The arrival of new EV brands like Ola has also popularized the trend, with enquiries from consumers seeing a sharp spike in recent months.
However, the lack of charging infrastructure is a major deterrent for potential customers. EV retailers are calling on the government to build more charging points alongside national highways and within key cities, and to encourage private operators to set up charging points by offering incentives. This would enable more people to buy EV cars in the state.
The data shows that electric two-wheelers are the most popular type of EV, followed by motor cabs, three-wheeler goods and passenger vehicles, e-rickshaws, goods carriers, and others. The public and automobile retailers are optimistic about the growth of the EV sector, citing the economic benefits and environmental advantages of switching to electric vehicles.
As the demand for EVs continues to grow, the state government and private operators must work together to address the infrastructure challenges and create a supportive ecosystem for EV adoption. With the right incentives and investments in charging infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh can become a leader in the EV sector and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. The trend towards EV adoption is expected to continue, driven by the growing awareness of the benefits of electric vehicles and the increasing cost of fossil fuels.
