Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, addressed the 11th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2025, highlighting India’s significant progress in the renewable energy sector. The country’s installed solar capacity has increased by 4,000%, with its renewable energy capacity now standing at 227 GW. Goyal noted that India is likely the first G20 nation to have met its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Goyal cited the example of Palli village in Jammu and Kashmir, which has become India’s first carbon-neutral panchayat using solar energy and energy efficiency. He emphasized the importance of storage technologies, such as batteries and pumped storage, in meeting India’s future energy demands. The Minister also highlighted the government’s initiatives, including the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which aims to equip 1 crore households with rooftop solar panels, and the PM Kusum Yojana, which supports the expansion of solar pumps in India’s agrarian economy.

To achieve energy independence, Goyal proposed a four-pronged approach: targeted innovation, infrastructure development, supply chain resilience, and holistic value chain growth. He emphasized the need for India to lead in research and development for energy storage, focusing on next-generation battery chemistries and circular supply chains. The Minister also highlighted the recent Cabinet approval of a ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation Fund, which has the potential to match R&D investments of ₹6–7 lakh crore in advanced economies.

Goyal urged stakeholders to explore new opportunities to scale up operations and strengthen competitiveness. He reaffirmed India’s target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with energy storage playing a central role in this journey. The Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to build charging and battery swapping systems, accelerate electric vehicle adoption, and ensure affordable, accessible e-mobility.

The India Energy Storage Week (IESW) is a premier industry event that brings together global leaders, policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders to discuss innovations and policy developments critical to India’s energy transition. The event promotes dialogue, partnership, R&D, skill development, and technology showcase aligned with national energy goals. With India’s renewable energy sector on a focused path to becoming energy sufficient, the country is poised to become a leader in the global clean energy landscape.
