For those looking to travel long distances in an electric vehicle in Europe, a long-range electric sedan is the best option. With the upcoming implementation of the Euro 7 emissions requirements, these types of cars are becoming increasingly popular. To determine which sedan is the best for long-distance travel, Fifth Gear tested four top models: the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6, BMW i4, and Volkswagen ID.7.
The perfect car for long-distance travel should have a comfortable interior, ample trunk space, and the ability to drive for long stretches without stopping. The hosts, Jason Plato and Rory Reid, initially assumed the Tesla Model 3 would be the best, and while it is an excellent all-rounder with a good range and price, its cabin is not the most spacious or luxurious. The BMW i4, on the other hand, has the most luxurious and conventional cabin, but is the most expensive and has the smallest range.
The Volkswagen ID.7 has the roomiest cabin with the most legroom in the back, but is a bit boring to drive and look at. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has a distinctive design, good range, and is fun to drive, but its cabin feels cheap and its navigation system failed to pinpoint a specific destination during the test. After the Ioniq 6 and ID.7 were eliminated, the test came down to a two-horse race between the BMW i4 and the Tesla Model 3.
Ultimately, the Tesla Model 3 remains the industry leader, but the BMW i4 shows that other manufacturers have caught up. The test, known as the “salesperson test,” is a great way to determine which car is best for long-distance travel, as it simulates the demands of a salesperson who drives all day. If a car can meet the needs of a salesperson, it can certainly meet the less demanding needs of the average driver. By choosing one of these long-range electric sedans, drivers can have a comfortable and reliable vehicle for their daily commutes and occasional long trips.
