Tenaris, an international pipe company, has inaugurated its first solar energy park in Romania, with a capacity of 20 MW. The facility, which was built with an investment of $21.5 million, will supply electricity to a steel mill in the town of Quelerasi, utilizing renewable energy through photovoltaic panels. The project was funded by a combination of 70% from Tenaris and 30% from the European Union as part of the Recovery and Sustainability Plan.
The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from the Romanian government, the energy regulator, the Italian Embassy, and key partners and customers. Mihaela Popescu, President of Tenaris in Eastern Europe, North Sea Region, and Southern Sahara, emphasized the strategic importance of the project, stating that it will allow the company to reduce its indirect emissions and support its customers in their own decarbonization efforts.
This project is part of Tenaris’ global strategy to decarbonize production. The company has already implemented similar projects in Italy and China, and is also building two wind farms in Argentina. According to the company’s reports, it has reduced its pipe sales by 5% year-on-year, from 4.14 million tons in 2023 to 3.93 million tons in 2024. The reduction in sales is primarily due to a decrease in seamless pipe shipments to customers, which totaled 3.08 million tons, down 4% year-on-year.
