Tamil Nadu has been surpassed by Gujarat in wind energy capacity for the second consecutive year, according to official data for 2024-25. Gujarat now holds the top spot with a total installed capacity of 12,677.48 megawatts (MW), while Tamil Nadu’s total installed capacity stands at 11,739.91 MW. This marks a decline for Tamil Nadu, which was previously the leader in wind energy until 2022-23.

Despite this, Tamil Nadu remains a significant player in the wind energy sector, being the only southern state to have exceeded 11,000 MW in wind power, a historic milestone. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh follow closely behind in terms of wind energy capacity in the southern region.

Wind energy operators in Tamil Nadu have called upon the state government to provide more support and better facilities to attract small-scale investors and further boost the sector. Many small windmills in the southern districts have ceased operations over the years due to financial issues, and some windmills require upgrading. As a result, operators are urging the government to address these concerns to ensure the continued growth of the wind energy sector in the state.
