Sistema.bio, a company focused on delivering biogas plants to rural India, has reached a significant milestone of installing 100,000 biogas plants across 24 states. This achievement has brought clean energy solutions to over 600,000 people, replacing traditional fuels like firewood and fossil fuels, and reducing emissions and improving air quality. The company’s biodigesters not only provide clean energy but also produce organic biofertilizers that promote regenerative agriculture, enhancing soil health, and increasing crop productivity.
Sistema.bio’s journey has been powered by partnerships with corporates, non-profits, financial institutions, dairy companies, and government bodies. The company has mitigated 692,140 tons of CO2e, treated over 15 million tons of waste, and fertilized more than 1 million hectares of land annually. These efforts empower women, promote rural development, and support regenerative agriculture.
The company’s chief growth officer, Piyush Sohani, emphasized the significance of reaching 100,000 installations, which is a testament to the dedication of the team and partners. Sistema.bio’s vision is to empower 1 million farmers by 2030, further advancing India’s energy transition and climate agenda.
However, the journey has not been without challenges. Addressing financial barriers for smallholder farmers, building awareness, and providing reliable technical support in remote areas have been key obstacles. Despite these challenges, Sistema.bio’s biogas plants are approved by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), reinforcing the company’s efforts to drive wider adoption and scale impact.
Looking ahead, Sistema.bio is focused on scaling biogas adoption as a vital strategy for climate change mitigation. The company is tackling methane emissions, one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gases, and replacing traditional fuels like firewood and coal with clean biogas solutions reduces indoor air pollution and builds climate resilience among rural households.
