BMW reported a significant surge in the delivery of its battery electric vehicles (BEVs) during the first quarter of 2022. According to Reuters, BMW’s Q1 BEV deliveries increased by a third, or 33%, compared to the same period last year. This impressive growth is a testament to the German luxury automaker’s efforts to transition its fleet towards electric powertrains.

BMW delivered a total of 54,031 BEVs during Q1, up from 40,724 in the same quarter of 2021. This represents a significant increase in the company’s efforts to electrify its portfolio, with BEVs now accounting for around 12% of its total deliveries. The surge in BEV deliveries is attributed to the growing demand for eco-friendly vehicles, as well as BMW’s expanding range of BEV models, including the iX3, i4, and iNext.

The company has been investing heavily in the development of its electric vehicle technology and has set ambitious targets to reduce its carbon footprint. By 2025, BMW aims to have at least 25% of its global sales comprised of BEVs, with this percentage increasing to 50% by 2030. To support this goal, BMW is investing EUR 12 billion (approximately USD 13.7 billion) in electric vehicle technology and production.

BMW’s strategy has been to focus on developing a range of electric models, including plug-in hybrids, to appeal to a broader customer base. The company has also been expanding its charging infrastructure, partnering with service providers to install over 10,000 charging stations across Europe.

The growth in BEV deliveries is not limited to BMW. The wider automotive sector is also experiencing a shift towards electric vehicles, driven by tightening emissions regulations and growing consumer demand for sustainable transportation options. As governments around the world set increasingly stringent targets for carbon reduction, automakers are being forced to adapt their strategies to meet these demands.
