IndiGrid, India’s leading Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) in the power sector, has announced the successful commissioning of the country’s first regulated utility-scale standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, Kilokari BESS Private Limited (KBPL). With a capacity of 20 MW / 40 MWh, this project marks IndiGrid’s first commercial venture into the battery storage segment and represents a significant milestone in India’s energy transition journey.
The KBPL project was developed to integrate renewable energy into the distribution-level grid system more effectively, playing a key role in stabilizing the grid, managing peak power demand, and addressing various ancillary services essential for a resilient power supply. The project was commissioned in record time with the support of various partners, including BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), Ampere-hour Energy (AHE), and others.
This development marks an important step forward for IndiGrid as it expands its portfolio of assets across India, covering transmission lines, solar generation, and now battery energy storage systems. With six projects commissioned under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) and Regulated Tariff Mechanism (RTM) frameworks, IndiGrid has demonstrated its project execution capabilities and commitment to building a more sustainable and resilient power infrastructure for the future.
According to IndiGrid’s CEO, Harsh Shah, “Battery energy storage is a key enabler of a resilient and efficient power system in India as the country moves toward a cleaner energy mix. The ability to store and dispatch power intelligently will be essential in maintaining grid stability and optimizing renewable integration.” With KBPL going live, IndiGrid is well-positioned to continue playing a significant role in India’s energy sector, providing innovative and sustainable solutions to support the country’s growing demand for clean energy.
