MG Motor Australia, a Chinese-owned company, is set to unveil a new low-cost electric vehicle (EV) called the MGS5 at the Melbourne Motor Show this week. The MGS5 is positioned as a successor to the MG4 and ZS EV, which were the first affordable electric cars introduced to the Australian market. The new model is expected to be one of MG’s best-sellers in 2025, with a price tag around $40,000.
The MGS5 EV features three battery packs, ranging from 49 kWh to 64 kWh, with two using Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) chemistry and one using Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) chemistry. It’s expected to be powered by a single rear-mounted motor, delivering up to 125 kW of power and capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in around 8 seconds. There may also be a 170 kW rear-wheel-drive variant available, although this is yet to be confirmed.
The new model features an upgraded infotainment system, with a 15.6-inch screen, an upgrade from the 10.25-inch screen found in Australian-bound MG4 models. The MGS5 is expected to be a key player in MG’s plans to deliver best-in-class value across every segment, with a vehicle for every Australian motorist.
The MGS5’s unveiling follow’s the announcement of MG’s plans for new premium electric cars, and the company’s commitment to delivering high-quality, technology-led options that meet the diverse needs of Australian drivers. The new model is set to be a significant addition to MG’s lineup, providing a more affordable electric vehicle option for Australian consumers. More details on the MGS5, including key local specifications and pricing, are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
