The Delhi government has allocated Rs 3,847 crore in its 2025-26 budget to provide 24-hour uninterrupted electricity supply to all residents, as announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The government intends to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to implement the “PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme”, which will provide a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 to residential consumers for solar energy installations.
The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Modi in February 2024, has already achieved a milestone of 10 lakh solar-powered homes as of March 10, 2024, and has received over 47.3 lakh applications, with an amount of over Rs 4,770 crore disbursed to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries. The Delhi government plans to equip 2.3 lakh residential rooftops with solar energy over the next three years, at a budget of Rs 50 crore, under the “PM Surya Ghar: Free Electricity Scheme – State Top Up”.
The government also aims to promote solar rooftops by providing net meters, timely inspection and commissioning of installations, vendor registration, and management, as well as by removing overhead cables across Delhi. A budget of Rs 100 crore has been allocated for this purpose. The chief minister emphasized that the removal of overhead cables would not only improve the city’s aesthetic appeal but also increase its security.
The Delhi government is committed to making the city an “energy-smart city” where every home is illuminated, every industry thrives, and the future is brightened by green energy. The government is taking steps to achieve this goal, including by promoting solar energy installations and laying underground transmission lines.
