A 31-year-old man, N Gowthaman, died on Friday after succumbing to his injuries sustained in a fire accident involving an electric bike. Gowthaman, an electric motor mechanic, and his 9-month-old daughter had been injured while trying to escape a blaze that engulfed their home in Maduravoyal, Chennai. The family of three, including his 28-year-old wife, Manju, had been living together in the house. On Sunday, Gowthaman awoke to find his electric bike on fire after he had left it charging in the portico and locked the gate. As the flames spread, he attempted to carry his daughter to the first floor, where his parents lived, but both he and his daughter suffered serious burns in the process. His wife, Manju, was also injured. The trio was taken to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where Gowthaman’s 9-month-old daughter had passed away first. Gowthaman’s death comes just four days after the tragic loss of his daughter, leaving his wife and family to mourn the loss of two loved ones in a short span of time.
